What is Canonical?

In the simplest form of the word, it is easy to define what is canonical. One can hear the word being thrown around everywhere especially where formal expression is encouraged. This is because the word canonical means based from the rules. In other words, if you are one who is particular with the rules, then you should follow canonical methods.

In the World Wide Web, a canonical name is synonymous to the host name of the computer or a network server. It is also canned a CNAME, which acts as a nickname or alias for the recorded host name of the domain. The domain name is not necessarily easy to remember, hence the use of more friendly words to describe it like the CNAME.

Some people confuse what is canonical to what is the host name of the website. Although id the host name is less stingy, the database can record the domain and the canonical name as one and the same. The database takes care of how the internet site locations are defined, especially websites.

Canonical plugins are universally developed by certain communities for the express purpose of sharing and popularity. The goal of this in reference to what is canonical is that it enables to develop a close connection with the need for superlative attention. The plugin is closely connected with the core of the site, and the development of a plugin that is secure and allows best examples for the implementation of coding standards is to be prioritized.

Moreover, the newly developed versions of cores should be tested against the prior developed plugins for compatibility issues. Now what is a canonical URL? The URL, which is the universal resource link used to identify the webpage with is the primary basis of crawlers used by search engines. A canonical URL is a part of the HTML head section wherein it is linked back to a certain site. This is the site provided for more information to be used by spiders during link back.

With the presence of a canonical URL, the search engines are told that the canonized site is a duplicate of the URL specified. Because of this, the page itself is a link to the URL. All contents and links that the engine has retrieved from the URL are treated as relevant to the search. The canonical URL links back to the main website where the index page is located. From the root, the crawler can find its way to subtopics that contain the keywords of its search, which does not depend on the form of retrieval it has used to acquire information.

This year, Google 2010 has set to release many distributions of the Chrome operating system is has been developing for years.

Last year, Google Chrome has increased its popularity with its faster method of browsing the internet. Its auto update feature was also included as well as the customizable theme of the window for a personal touch. Not only did Chrome steal the spotlight from existing browsers like Internet Explorer and Firefox, it also made a talk about what is to be expected from Google in 2010.

The Chrome browser is currently being revised, but its earlier versions are still available for download. If Google is capable of releasing an unfinished prototype of what it expects to achieve without figuring out the bugs first, what more can we expect from them?

Google has been ready with an answer to this. Recent interviews with Google confirmed that the Chrome has not been polished to perfection, but has been determined to meet the basic system requirements of the company. However, Google assured its users that the Google 2010 Chromium OS is to be better. It has been under development for years already and has been test checked by the senior developers of the company.

Google has made sure that the system requirements required by Chromium is easily satisfied, hindering any problem with only high end computers being able to use the operating system. Google will release the full scale operating system once it has been polished; no specific date has been determined yet.

Developing a full scale operating system is tedious and is expected to be flawless. However, it is known that the presence of bugs cannot be predetermined and can arise in perfectly normal situations. Similarly stated, there has been no currently developed open source system aside from the distributions of Linux that is continuously being developed by open source developers. Google got the idea from the ever changing interface and functionalities of Mandrake, Red Hat and other Linux forms that they have decided to par with their own. Chromium is expected to be compatible with Windows software.

Domain Name Renewal Scam From China?

Was this an internet domain name renewal scam? I shared my expertise and you examined it yourself.

I just received this email titled ‘Internet Trademark Protect’ claiming that one of my domain names was going to be trademarked by a company call DERUI Investment and I was asked if I objected to the third party application claim. I started to get worried and troubled if my domain name would be revoked.

Then I read the email again and I began to doubt because I spotted simple grammar and syntax errors like ‘asia’ is spelt ‘ASIA’ and the date is typed ‘February,2nd,2010’. The ending signature was really done unprofessionally. If a big company was big enough to buy up all the variant domain names and trademarked it, then they would get a decent representative to handle such matter and the representative would unlikely sign off so mildly.

The 2 giveaways were the contact ‘Tel:+86(0)21 6296 2950’ and the website link ‘web:www.ygnetwork.cn’. If it was a China based company, unlikely they would put the plus sign (+) and the bracketed zero. A typical Chinese company would put the contact in this format, (021) 1234 5678. Obviously, the sender was targeting non China resident to call into China. The website was not hyperlinked and used the word ‘web:’ which was not what a typical Chinese company would do. Not hyperlinked mean it was deliberately unlink, then why still typed in the web address.

I did a whois on the domain name ygnetwork.cn and ygnetwork.org.cn and traced it. The whois information were messy. Then I quickly checked the email header and the email address [email protected] could not be validated. It was interesting to note that the A in the Angela@ was capitalised.

Finally I went over to view the website. First thing, I scrolled all the way down to the footer to look for the ICP licence. The ICP licence was not displayed. No ICP licence number on the website means it was not registered with the local authority that the company was registered and this was violating China internet regulations. In simple English, it was illegal and law breaking. How could a company that claimed to be a domain name registration and bearing the .cn without displaying ICP licence. This was the greatest giveaway that it was a scam.

There were many things I could still checked and exposed if it was a domain name renewal scam like, the phone numbers used on the website was it a mobile number that faked a land line number. I could also check the directory to validate the occupant of the address and so forth but I need not anymore because the ICP number missing from the website was sufficient for me to pass the judgement.

If you went to the contact page, you could find the Beijing and Hongkong share a similar address. If you were familiar with Hangzhou, you would easily spot that the address was wrong. Lastly, how could a .cn website not available in Chinese language.

The whole setup had a lot scam elements. An invalid email address that you cannot reply but to make a call to one of their numbers. A scammer always preferred a phone call than email conversation because it was not traceable. A lot of cannot-make-sense credentials to valid the website legitimacy. Contact numbers displayed in a uniformed format that made it easy for it potential targets to make the initial call.

A domain name renewal scam or a real legitimate business, you decided?

Below was the content I received in my email.

Dear Manager:

We are a Domain Name registration service company, which is a professional Internet Domain Name Registration and dispute resolution organization in China.On February,2nd,2010, We received DERUI Investment company’s application that they are registering the name “mydomain” as their Internet Trademark and “mydomain.cn”,”mydomain.com.cn” ,”mydomain.asia”domain names etc.,It is China and ASIA domain names.But after auditing we found the brand name been used by your company. As the domain name registrar in China, it is our duty to notice you, so I am sending you this Email to check.According to the principle in China,your company is the owner of the trademark,In our auditing time we can keep the domain names safe for you firstly, but our audit period is limited, if you object the third party application these domain names and need to protect the brand in china and Asia by yourself, please let the responsible officer contact us as soon as possible. Thank you! Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards

Google – Empty Vessel Makes the Most Noise
Why Google always complaining about the Chinese censorship and not Microsoft and Yahoo. We do not hear so much nonsenses from other search companies but Google. And once a while from Matt Mullenweg too! Why?

China is a country with fifty-six ethnic groups, sharing land borders with fourteen countries. World largest population with a recorded population of 1.3 billion plus another estimated of at least one billion unregistered citizens and now the second largest economy in the world.

A big growing nation with so many cultural and ethnic differences, and fourteen different borders to defence, not including those still disputing over territorial rights, the Chinese government is managing their lands and people as one unified country and will not allow extremists or religious zealots to cause instability to the country or dethrone its sovereignty.

As a sovereign nation, the Chinese government is doing it best to protect it citizens. China still have a huge population of less educated citizens and these people can be easily manipulated by extremists. Using technologies from Google and Twitter, an extremist can easily raise an army to go against the government.

If the supremacy of the President of the United States has been compromised, schedules of the president publish on the internet and articles circulating on Twitter with title like ‘Three Easy Steps To Kill The President’. Will Google in the name of freedom of speech allows such contents to circulate freely? I believe any country leadership that is threaten by contents on the internet, the government will take it own initiative to censor, like the chinese censorship, and protect it sovereignty, just like catching illegal arms dealers smuggling arms into a country.

So many years have past, why Google has not learn it lesson and still cannot grab a stable foothold in the Chinese market? China has four thousands years of history. It has it own diverse cultures and beliefs the country still trying to cope with. Most of the families are still poor today and still depending on farming or living on daughters’ hard earned money from prostitution. China has come a long and hard way in it reform and it is still learning to fit itself into the modern world.

Does Google really has an understanding of the Chinese market or it just a bimbo brand? If you do a Chinese keyword search and compare Google search results for Chinese based contents to other Chinese search engines, it will show you how Google is so lack behind. This indicates to me that Google do not have an understanding of the Chinese internet. From the beginning, If Google has take it time to understand the Chinese culture and learn the Chinese way, I believe by now, Google is also the number one search engine in China.

Google please do not impose your western education in a Chinese culture. Instead learn to blend in your enriched western technologies into Chinese censorship, helping the Chinese government to build a better future and not condemning it to build your own egoistic empire at the expense of a country sovereignty.
